 Caroline's Corner

Like the seasons of the year – life marches on.

My niece, Ellie, celebrated her first birthday, is finally growing hair, talking in her own language, learning to walk and is cute as a “button” with big blue eyes.

Thank you for your cards, calls, visits and friendships when my mom passed away.  They were greatly appreciated!  During her illness and since, my dad has experienced how “senior friendly” our community can be.  It wasn’t a mistake Smart Money recommended Columbia as a good place to retire.

In fact, here at Caroline & Company, we appreciate recent retirees who are seeking second careers or part-time employment.   They’re generally experienced, dependable and prepared; and as such, are an excellent addition to our diverse range of employees. If your firm needs quality temporary or permanent staffing, let us know. We always have great people of all ages.

Hope to stay in touch,

Weird Trivia

In a lifetime, the average person walks the equivalent of twice around the world and sheds 40 pounds of skin.

In 1900, the average age at death for U.S. residents was 47.

In 1960, an estimated 4,000 U.S. residents were over 100 years old.  By 1995 the number had jumped to 55,000.

By 2015, the number of employees over 55 will reach a record 31.9 million.

Presently, 64% of the people providing hands-on care for their elderly parents or other family members or friends work for a living at another position.

Researchers say, Americans age 55 and above take fewer sick days and are more loyal to their employer than those in their thirties.

In the US, 2.74 billion pounds of turkey is processed per year.

The Montgomery Wards Co. created Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer for a children's booklet they distributed in 1939.

Surviving the Workplace as You Age

We've put together a number of resources containing beneficial survival information. If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, why not check out the following?

The Law in Reference to Age

Whether currently employing, employed or looking for employment, there are some specific employer policies and practices you should be aware of. All employers should insist on age-neutral employment practices that apply to all employees, regardless of how old or young they are.

Age Laws and Regulations: The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

How to Insist on Age-Neutral Employment Practices

Working + Caregiving and the Law

Since 1993, federal law offers some support through the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). It allows eligible workers up to 12 weeks a year of unpaid leave for family caregiving without loss of job security or health benefits.

There are restrictions -- such as company size and the amount of time a worker has been employed.

Socks & Undies For Kids

This Holiday season - Caroline & Company, along with Santa and his reindeer gang, are once again teaming with Rainbow House (a local emergency shelter for abused and neglected children of all ages) in an enormous "Socks & Undies for Kids" collection effort.  If you wish to be a part of this worthwhile cause, you are invited to drop off tasteful, new underwear and/or pull-ups by December 22nd in any size, color or design appropriate for kids, age newborn to eighteen.  Socks are also being accepted - but, new underwear is this year's priority.

In the past, Rainbow House has provided services to between 350 and 450 mid-Missouri children annually - around 40% of which stayed at Rainbow's emergency shelter.  With their new Towne Drive facility recently opening, the number of children being admitted for shelter will certainly increase.  It's not unreasonable for Rainbow House to anticipate going through 2,000 or more pairs of underwear in the coming year.  Plus, when you factor in the pull-ups, the total projected need is huge - probably several thousand pairs.

It's Santa's goal to have a sleigh full of undies and pull-ups by Christmas.  He wants to provide new underwear for each and every Rainbow House child for the coming year.  Why not help Santa?

Individuals or businesses, located in Columbia, MO, that can't get by the C & C office during business hours are invited to call 573-449-3109 to request free pick-ups of multiple "Socks & Undies for Kids" donations.

RESULT NOTICE: Rainbow House, Caroline & Company and Santa wish to send a great big THANK YOU to all the businesses, schools, day cares, organizations and individuals who so kindly and generously donated to this worthwhile Holiday effort.

As a result of their enormous compassion and generosity, 19,477 new pull-ups, diapers, underwear, socks and more have been collected.
