CAROLINE & COMPANY IN BUSINESS TWENTY YEARS

Caroline & Company, an office-support staffing service at 311 S. Providence Road, under the management and ownership of its founder, Caroline J. Maher, will mark 20 years of continuous operation in Columbia, Missouri, as of October 1, 2002.  Maher said, “When I started in the Menser Building on Broadway with one electric typewriter, a phone, and a dream, I had no idea how much the staffing industry and Columbia would change in just 20 years.”  Maher indicated her business had seen the evolution of the fax, desktop computer, cell phone, and now the Internet.  Caroline went on line with an extensive website, www.carolineandcompany.com, last month.

Maher mentioned the following “then and now” comparisons:

We were known as a “Temp” service – now, we’re called a “Staffing” service.

We placed “secretaries” – now, we’re offering “office assistants.”

People wrote with a pencil – now, they click with a mouse.

The average Columbia real-estate transaction was $54,752 – now, it’s $115,862.

Biscayne Mall was “the place” to shop – soon, it will be gone.

Columbia’s permanent population was just over 62,000 – now, it exceeds 84,500 people.

“Love Boat” and “T. J. Hooker” were on TV – now, it’s “Survivor” and the “Osbourne’s.”

Columbia’s notorious “Can Ban” ordinance was upheld by a majority vote for the 3rd time – recently, it went down in defeat.

Ray Beck was Public Works Director – now, he is our City Manager.

A first-class postage stamp was only 20 cents – currently, a first-class letter will cost you 37 cents.

A matinee ticket for, On Golden Pond, was $2.00 – now, a matinee showing of Goldmember runs $4.50.

A Columbia Daily Tribune was 25 cents – now, it sells for 50 cents; and

These Columbia businesses were open (Bargain Barn, Goldie’s, Woolco, Safeway, Novus Shop, Sunday’s Child, Flaming Pit, Malachi’s, Bobby Buford’s, and Shorty’s) – now, they are a part of our history.

Just as it did backing 1982, Caroline & Company still specializes in office-support staffing with temporary, temp-to-hire, and direct-hire options.
